So you have a DVD burner, but what can you do with it? Besides copying enormous amounts
of data from your computer's hard drive to a DVD, you can also copy all of your DVD movies! Why would you
want to do this? Have you ever scratched a DVD movie, or dropped it and it broke? No one is going to give
you a replacement; you have to go buy another one. That's why it's a good idea to make a backup copy of all
your DVDs! In fact, as soon as you buy a DVD, you should make a copy and then store your new DVD in a safe place,
using the copy for viewing.
The jury is still out on the legalities of doing this. Of course it is illegal to copy a DVD that you do not own, or to
copy a DVD with the intent of giving or selling it to someone else. To stay legal, you should only copy DVDs that
you legally own, and you should never allow them to leave your home. Even then many of the Hollywood studios are throwing
a fit. They want you to have to buy a new DVD should you break or damage your original. The way most consumers see it, if you
bought it, you should be able to do whatever you want with it in the privacy of your own home. Just like a music CD where
you copy songs to cassette, computer and MP3 player, most consumers agree that you should be able to do the same with your movies.
This being said, copy at your own risk.
Most DVDs are encrypted. This encryption prevents the consumer from copying the DVD. Even with DVD copying software, the
DVD must be decrypted first. Software developers are afraid to create a program that will decrypt AND copy the DVD for fear
of being prosecuted, so here is the simple solution: There are two programs; one that decrypts and one the copies.
On the right side of this page there are two links; the first one is the decryption software and the second
is the DVD copying software. While these are two separate downloads, don't let is scare you. Yes, you will have
two programs to install, but once they are set up, from then on it's a simple one-step, one-click process to copy movies.
The decryption software is free; the copy software is less than $100. Install the decryption software first. Then install
the DVD copying software. You do not have to have two DVD players/recorders to copy the DVD. You can make copies
with one DVD recorder by swapping the movie DVD with a blank DVD when prompted by the software.
You might find that one day you start having problems decrypting some DVDs. This will most likely be a result of new
encryption methods recently implemented by the movie studios. Check for a newer version of your decryption software as the
developers are pretty good about keeping this current. After all, if you can't copy DVDs then they don't sell their software.
The type of media (blank DVDs) you use is very important. A normal DVD holds over 4 GB of data. This will work fine
for copying DVDs, but you should know that their is a newer, dual-layer format that stores over 8 GB of data. Some
of the DVDs today have lots of bonus material and require more than 4 GB. The software is pretty good at handling this.
It uses special compression to make the movie even smaller without altering the Dolby Digital sound quality. The movie will
always be copied but often the bonus material will be left off when there isn't enough room. The dual-layer DVDs can solve this
problem if the bonus material is important to you, but they are more expensive. Also make sure that you purchase 8x or 16x speed
DVDs. This is how fast the data is written to the DVD and can make the difference of minutes vs. hours when copying. Your DVD should also
support the fast speeds.
Not all DVD recorders are created equally. There are normal DVD burners, dual-layer burners, and then they have the
different speeds. If yours was purchased in the first part of the decade, you probably have a 2x or 4x burner. Today's
burners are 16x and faster. A 16x is 4 times faster than a 4x. This means a movie that takes 20 minutes to copy on a 16x
will take 1 1/2 hours on a 4x burner. If you have a 16x burner but use 4x media, the burner slows down to the rate of the
media and it will take longer.
Back up your movies, but stay legal. Only backup movies you own, and don't let anyone else have access to them. While even
this practice might be illegal, we will have to wait until the final rulings are in to see how this all works out. If there are
widespread abuses then the courts might be tough on the issue; but as long as law abiding citizens use these software
programs out there for backup purposes only, then the consumers should win this pending litigation.
